Hollywood actor Val Kilmer, known for some of the biggest movies of the 1980s and 90s, including Top Gun and Batman Forever, has died aged 65.
Val Kilmer, the charismatic and often enigmatic actor known for his powerful screen presence, died on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 65.
He gained widespread recognition for his leading roles in The Doors, Top Gun and Batman Forever, where his performances left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike.
Kilmer’s career, which spanned several decades, reflected his incredible range and adaptability. From action-packed blockbusters to comedies and period dramas, he moved effortlessly between genres.
His first major appearance came in 1984 with the spy spoof Top Secret!, where his comedic timing and charm were instantly apparent. Yet it was his portrayal of rock legend Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) that truly defined his talent.
Kilmer wasn’t just a leading man—he excelled in supporting roles as well. His turn as Iceman in Top Gun (1986) made him a Hollywood standout, and in Heat (1995), he held his own alongside De Niro and Pacino.
The cause of death
The actor, who had been battling throat cancer since 2014, left a lasting impact on the film world. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed that he died of pneumonia, marking the end of a career defined by a voice—both literal and artistic—that echoed through generations.
In a statement to the New York Times, Mercedes Kilmer confirmed that her father passed away from pneumonia. He died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday, April 1. The news has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and fellow actors, all remembering the mark he left on cinema.
Among those paying tribute was actor Josh Brolin, who shared a heartfelt message on Instagram alongside a photo of the two. “See ya, pal. I’m going to miss you,” Brolin wrote. “You were a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker. There’s not a lot left of those. I hope to see you up there in the heavens when I eventually get there. Until then, amazing memories, lovely thoughts.”
