Angel Reese Benched in Fourth Quarter as Sky Coach Praises Her Versatility and Grit

Angel Reese, one of the WNBA’s brightest young stars, found herself on the bench during the critical moments of the Chicago Sky’s thrilling 97-92 victory over the Dallas Wings. The decision by head coach Tyler Marsh raised eyebrows, especially as Reese continues to face both praise and criticism amid a challenging start to her sophomore season.

Despite being the fastest player in WNBA history to surpass 500 points and 500 rebounds, Reese’s early 2025 campaign has been a mixed bag. While her stats remain impressive, some critics have questioned her focus and consistency on the court.

During Thursday’s game, Reese tallied just six points but contributed nine rebounds and five assists in 25 minutes. With the Sky clinging to a narrow lead in the fourth quarter, Marsh opted to turn to his bench for fresh energy, temporarily pulling Reese from the lineup.

After the game, Marsh was quick to address the decision and defend his star player. “That’s who Angel is in the best way,” Marsh said. “Her skill set allows her to impact the game in so many ways—not just as a rebounder or scorer. Even when the shots aren’t falling, she’s making plays, grabbing crucial rebounds, and setting up her teammates. That versatility is what makes her so valuable, and she’s really embraced that role.”

Marsh also revealed that Reese may have been dealing with discomfort in her hand—a lingering concern after she fractured her left hand in 2024 and underwent surgery, cutting short her standout rookie season. “We’ll reassess and have a better idea later,” Marsh noted, suggesting that Reese’s health will continue to be monitored.

Despite the criticism, Reese has maintained her trademark confidence and resilience, unafraid to clap back at doubters on social media. “Y’all be feeling too entitled thinking y’all opinions matter about somebody else’s life instead of minding your own business,” she tweeted, making it clear that she won’t let outside noise derail her focus.

As the Sky look to build momentum after their first win of the season, all eyes remain on Angel Reese—her performance, her leadership, and her unbreakable spirit. If history is any indication, Reese is just getting started.
