Lainey Wilson Dazzles at AMAs with “Somewhere Over Laredo,” a Stirring Homage to a Classic
Country music’s brightest star, Lainey Wilson, delivered a show-stopping performance at the 51st American Music Awards, captivating audiences with her heartfelt new ballad, “Somewhere Over Laredo.” Inspired by the timeless magic of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” Wilson’s latest release is quickly earning her praise as the new queen of country.
On May 23, Wilson unveiled “Somewhere Over Laredo,” a wistful track that tugs at the heartstrings with its nostalgic nod to lost love. But it was her live debut at the AMAs on May 26 that truly stole the show. Dressed in an ethereal all-white ensemble complete with a flowing cape, Wilson looked every bit the country royalty as she delivered a performance fans are calling “the best of the night.”

Social media erupted with acclaim. “My favorite new song,” one fan raved on Instagram. Another declared, “Such a great play on a classic lyric loved by all.” The praise didn’t stop at her vocals—her dreamy, bridal-inspired look had fashion enthusiasts swooning as well.
While the melody echoes Judy Garland’s legendary 1938 hit, Wilson’s lyrics paint a modern picture of longing and heartbreak. “Caught me a red eye flight out of Houston… My head’s thirty thousand feet in the clouds, knowing twenty minutes from now, I’ll be somewhere over Laredo,” she croons, blending classic country storytelling with her signature soulful style.

The new single is just a taste of what’s to come. “Somewhere Over Laredo” will be featured on Wilson’s upcoming “Whirlwind Deluxe” album, set for release on August 22, 2025. The expanded record will also include fan favorites like “Bell Bottoms Up,” “King Ranch, King George, King James,” “Yesterday, All Day, Every Day,” and “Peace, Love, and Cowboys.”
2025 has already been a landmark year for the 33-year-old singer-songwriter. In February, Wilson announced her engagement, and earlier this month, she made history at the Academy of Country Music Awards, taking home Entertainer of the Year for the second consecutive year, Female Artist of the Year for the third year running, as well as Album of the Year and Artist-Songwriter of the Year.

With her soulful voice, poetic lyrics, and undeniable stage presence, Lainey Wilson is charting a course straight to country music legend status. As fans eagerly await her new album, one thing is clear: Wilson’s whirlwind is just beginning.
